Sally Hamblin passed away on January 12, 2015 due to complications from influenza and pneumonia. She was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 24 March 1934, to Walter and Daisy Peterlein. She moved to Provo to study English at BYU, where she met W. Kenneth Hamblin. They were married on August 29, 1952 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Sally had a keen sense of style that came through in the beautiful home she created. She was a dutiful wife and mother, and excellent cook. Her home was often a second home for family, international students, and friends who lived there for extended periods.
One of her greatest gifts to her children was a passion for reading; she always had a stack of books by her chair. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren loved to crawl on her lap and have her read books to them. As an active member of the LDS Church, Sally served in many leadership positions in Primary, Young Women’s and Relief Society. She had a beautiful alto voice and was a member of her ward’s choir. She was the first woman in her ward to give a prayer in Sacrament Meeting.
Sally was an intrepid traveler; she and Ken traveled extensively and visited multiple countries on all 7 continents. She was always ready for adventure, riding camels, parasailing, snorkeling, and braving frigid temperatures in Antarctica to see penguins. She also loved the art museums of Paris. Visiting ancient ruins prompted her to work as a docent for the King Tut Exhibit at BYU in 1985-86. She was a passionate Bridge player, playing with the same Bridge club for over 50 years. She also enjoyed reading, shopping, and attending cultural events. Due to her expertise in the English language, she worked with Ken as an editor for his text books and lab manuals.
Ken preceded Sally in death, along with her grandson, Blake Donner, and her dear friend Sharon Jacobs. She is survived by her 4 children, Bill Hamblin, Lisa (Richard) Robison, Laura Hamblin, and Kim (Garret) Hamblin-Hart, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
