Athena Stella Konakis Swasey Obituary (1933

In loving memory of Athena Swasey, born July 15, 1933 and died December 14, 2021. Athena was born in Sunnyside, Utah to Gust and Stella Konakis. She was one of 16 children including her twin sister, Angie. She had 10 children of which 8 survived. She was widowed from her husband, Charles R. Swasey, when she was 28 years old leaving her to raise all of the children by herself. Athena was a homemaker, she converted from the Greek Orthodox church in Price to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by missionaries at the age of 21. She admired them and had married into the family of Rodney DeGrass Swasey who made his way west with Brigham Young. When she settled in Provo in the Bonneville Ward, she said she came home. She was very fond of the young people from the church who dropped in to check on her when her health was failing. She loved teasing and joking with them. Athena loved her family and was always there for them. It breaks our hearts to lose her, she was one in a billion. She is survived by 3 sisters, Constance Poglajen, Marion Kogianes, and her twin sister Angie Lawerence. 2 Brothers, Lynn Kanakis and Stanley Kanakis. 7 Children, Charlotte Nielsen, Nancy & (Eldon) Smith, Josephine & (Rick) Pyne, Valene Swasey, George & (Angela) Swasey, Lynn & (Lisa) Swasey, and Stanley Swasey. 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Gus & Stella, her brothers Steve, Johnny, Andrew, Angelo, and Nick. Her sisters Harriet, Helen, Annie, Artemis, and Mary Rizzuto, Her son Charles Rod Swasey III, and his two boys, Chad and Charles Swasey, and grandsons Michael Lanphear and Mark Nielsen. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, December 20, 2021 at the Bonneville 1st Ward Chapel, 85 South 900 East, Provo, Utah. Friends may call from 10-11:15 a.m. prior to services.
