Charles Melville Smith Jr. was born September 9, 1927. He passed away in peace on February 9, 2021 at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho with his wife and youngest son by his side. He was born and raised in Utah with 5 siblings. He was drafted and served in the United States Army for 1 year. He attended La Sierra College in California. When he was a senior there, he met his wife, a freshmen at the time. He attended Medical School at Loma Linda University specializing in Orthopedic surgery. He completed his residency at Los Angeles County Hospital. He and his brother Paul joined the Smith Clinic their father had started in Provo. He was well-known and loved as both a doctor and surgeon where he often gave his time, money, and skills without charge. He felt strongly about fighting for justice for those who had no voice in their environment or needed a hero in their court. He enjoyed playing the cello, whistling, the beauty of flowers, speeding through Hobble Creek canyon, snow skiing, hiking, and photography. He was passionately involved in the local Seventh Day Adventist Church. He lived and practiced medicine in Provo until 2007 when he moved to be close to his youngest daughter in Coeur d Alene. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, 5 children and his youngest sister. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2021 at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Street, Provo, Utah.
