George Robert Ungricht Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

On Oct. 13, 2016, at the age of 93, one of America’s Greatest Generation, George Robert Ungricht, passed away peacefully at his son’s home surrounded by loving family. George was born in Spring Canyon, Utah on Nov. 16, 1922. He was the third child of Daniel Ungricht and Manilla Farish. He was a fun loving little boy full of energy and a deep love of his parents. At the age of 6 his family moved to East Millcreek, Utah where he went to school and graduated from Granite High school as an All State Wrestling Champion. Coming out of the Great Depression, George hired on with the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad at the age of 17, where he worked for 49 years. After Pearl Harbor was attacked George enlisted in the Navy in 1942. Following basic training in Idaho he was assigned to the USS Maury, a destroyer in the 3rd Fleet in the Pacific arena, where he was part of every major battle in the Pacific for the remainder of World War II. The USS Maury was one of the most decorated ships having received the Presidential Unit Citation. Everyone who knew him knew him as a quiet man of few words, who never raised his voice to anyone but would show great love and quiet action. His marriage to Elva Liddiard was solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple on March 29, 1951 and together they had three children, Sharon, Phil and Lori. He loved to golf and was the fix it man around the house. Active in the LDS faith, he was Bishop of the Provo Eleventh and Franklin Wards in the Provo Utah South Stake and he and Elva served a mission at the Provo Tabernacle. He will be remembered for his love of his 3 children, 8 grandchildren and especially singing his lullabies to each of his 15 great-grandchildren, as he would hold them close and rock them in his arms. His influence was felt not only by his family, but by everyone who associated with him and knew him. With his passing the world is now a lesser place. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Liddiard Ungricht; parents; brother, William D Ungricht; and sisters, Ona Mary Ungricht and Donna Rae Dechter. He is survived by his children, Sharon (Kelly) Faucette, Phil (Mollie) Ungricht, and Lori Ungricht. The Ungricht family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the aides, nurses, and chaplain from Tender Care Home Health and Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Franklin Ward Building, 610 West 300 South, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Thursday, October 20, from 6-8:00 p.m. and at the church Friday, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services.
