Glenda Faye Grange Shumway Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Glenda Faye Grange Shumway, age 81, passed away peacefully of causes incident to age and dementia at the Canterbury Assisted Living Center in Springville, UT February 28th, 2022. She was the second of four children and was born in Provo, UT to Lorin Leasil Grange and Myrle Hansen August 23, 1940. Glenda was a beloved lady with many friends who looked up to and admired her for her many gifts and talents. During her younger years, Glenda was a member of the 4H Club and enjoyed horseback riding and rodeos. She graduated from Orem High School and was active in pep clubs and singing groups. She married Louis Wilkins in 1957 and moved to San Diego, CA where Louis served in the Navy, and then later moved to Tremonton, UT where they both worked at Thiokol, one of the largest private defense contractors in Utah. They had two sons, but then later divorced. She married Nyle Shumway in 1965 and they lived in Orem, UT where Nyle ran a service station for over 10 years, and then served on the Orem Police Force for a few years, before entering the commercial construction trade for the remainder of his career. They had one son together, who later passed away of leukemia at age 23. They moved to Provo, UT in 2006, and Nyle passed away from heart failure in 2014. Glenda remained living in their home in Provo until 2020 at which time she moved into the assisted living center in Springville, UT for health reasons. During her career as a secretary for Crown Toyota of Provo, UT, and several other dealerships, she had responsibilities to ensure that all the vehicles that were sold had license plates and spent much of her time running back and forth from the DMV to the dealerships to get the plates and type up the needed paperwork. She and Nyle worked very hard to provide the necessities of life and to obtain a comfortable living for their family and means to include skis, bicycles, and musical instruments for their children. She was a gifted archer and belonged to the Timpanogos Archery Club where she excelled in target shooting and won or placed in many meets and received many trophies. She was also a talented bowler and bowled in leagues for many years where she also acquired many trophies. Her trophy case, which is over 6’ tall, was one of her prize possessions and she loved to tell the stories behind each event and her accomplishments. Boating was also one of her favorite pastimes and she and her husband Nyle were members of the Timp Marina Boat Club for many years. They enjoyed camping at the boat club in their fifth wheel camp trailer for nights on end and associating with the other club members and having parties. She also enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing and never missed an opening day of the rifle and archery deer hunt. She enjoyed vacations to Boulder Mountain, Joe's Valley, Flaming Gorge, and Lake Powell. Glenda was an active member of the Sunset 3rd Ward and enjoyed serving in the primary. She is preceded in death by her husband Nyle, son Craig and grandson Dustin. She has two surviving sons, Boyd Wilkins (Lynda) of Provo, UT and Eric Wilkins (Bonnie) of Spanish Fork, UT; 6 grandchildren: Stacey, Lane, Kristina, Garth, Dustin, and Leesa; and 10 great grandchildren: Trieden, Kaleb, Corey, Brenden, Erin, Lexi, Grace, Tommy, Madison, and Jaxson. As a family, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the members of the Sunset 3rd Ward who nurtured and cared for our mother for many years. You were always there whenever she needed anything and often went the second mile to make her feel comfortable and safe while living in her home alone. We will always be grateful for your compassion and kind service to our mother. Memories of Grandma from her grandchildren: My favorite memory of my Grandma Shumway. This was on one of our trips back to Utah. The exact year escapes me. Was when I was a teenager for sure. Grandma expressed a desire to spend quality time with Kristina and me. She made sure all was well with everyone. She’s quite good at doing so. So, this came to be at an evening time. The Sun had gone down, and the three of us were on the beautiful large red deck Grandpa had made. She brought out a candle holder that had deer and forest cut into it. The light of the flame shown through them. She explained this had come from Kathy, Craig’s fiancé. Though he had gone to the other side of the veil some years before, she had continued to get Grandpa Father’s Day presents. Grandma had stories for us. Grandma Stories. Stories as such only Grandmas can convey. The most poignant and memorable for me, was her relating a time of how difficult it was for her and Grandpa with Craig’s passing. They loved the Church and all their family. But losing a child, they weren’t in the best of places so to speak. She said there came a time when they were just so sad. Just couldn’t seem to cope at all that day. Grandpa said aloud, why what is the purpose, our son, our son. Then, this is very special and sacred. Somethings clinked against something in another room. It was not a pet, and they looked at each other. Grandpa said aloud, please help us understand this makes sense. Grandma then put the next events in such a way I fail to relay the emotion and feeling that was happening for them. The light above them flickered. Then such a feeling of deep peace and divine understanding came upon them both as to lift out of any depths of sorrow. Hope restored. It was seen in each other’s eyes and felt in each heart. There is a plan. My grandmother had a few other events like this she explained happened. But this was a turning point she said that they wanted to live to be together again in the celestial kingdom. Grief of course was still there to be processed but they had hope again. I can scarce remember such a tale from anyone else. This was so special, and she felt to share it with us. At this close time with us. I am unsure if Kristina remembers this. It seemed to be a time of sharing, not for mortal memory, but acts of spiritual confirmation. She said this helped her then and every day of her life. This was a woman who always knew how to look very nice and exude kindness and charity. She had a friend who cleaned houses but couldn’t for a time, so Grandma cleaned these houses for her until she was. This great woman was truly in tune and was comforted by the Holy Ghost the constant companion. The look in her eyes and the feeling of confirmation I had of her telling us these things I will never forget though. I am ever so grateful to my grandma of love, my Grandma Shumway. Lane Wilkins My favorite memories with my grandmother were boating at Utah lake, camping at Lake Powell, and spending endless weekends at the Timp Marina Boat Club. Always loved going to Grandma’s house for Christmas, she always decorated breathtaking Christmas Trees. Leesa Eshelman So, one of my favorite memories of Grandma is the first time I and Ale had dinner at her house. Where she told us stories about her life & the story of how she met Grandpa Shumway. She told us stories about bowling and archery, she could remember which of her friends supported her & which ones thought she was silly. How she first got in the archery because somebody said a girl couldn't do it or that she was too girly something like that. and so, she did it and then found out that she liked it. So, she kept doing it. the first time she got 1st place trophy she felt most of her shots were not that great until she got down to the final rounds & realized she was doubting herself. So, she decided to stop overthinking & have fun. Then next thing she knew she had won. My other favorite memories of her are the way her eyes would light up when she talked about going on drives or hunting trips with Grandpa. No matter what the story as if it included Him her eyes would smile & glow, I could always tell how much she loves that man. Garth Wilkins Grandma Shumway was incredible. She had such a giving heart and I loved spending time with her. Some of my favorite memories was visiting with her while she put on her makeup. As a little girl she would have me sit next to her and I just loved the special time to spend together. I loved going out on Utah Lake with her and Grandpa and camping trips in the mountains. I also thought the Motorhome was just the coolest thing ever. When Erin was a little girl and we came to visit, I loved watching Grandma spend time with her and make her feel special. Erin remembers going to her room and Grandma would let her try on her jewelry and smell her perfume. She once sent Erin a Caboodle full of costume jewelry to play with and some of the perfume bottles. It was a treasure to Erin. Many of my good memories are just sitting and visiting, listening to her share stories while enjoying root beer floats. She was loved and will be missed. Stacey Johnson I have many fond memories of my Grandma Shumway. I remember staying up late and her telling Lane and I stories when we were young. I came to love egg nog and sprite mixed together because of her. Many times, while I was at BYU, I had dinner at their house. Grandpa and Grandma took me to the MTC when I served my mission. She let me wear her pearls for my wedding and visited me in the hospital after I had my first baby. I loved visiting her and hearing her stories. She shared many spiritual experiences with me, and I will always treasure being in the temple with her when she was sealed to Grandpa after he died. I loved watching her play with my children and getting out old toys for them to play with. She was a special lady and will be greatly missed.
