Helen Dahlquist Obituary (1918

Helen Holbrook Dahlquist, 93, passed peacefully from this mortal life early on June 16, 2011. She lived a long and full life, devoted to her family and her faith. Helen was born to Lafayette Hinckley Holbrook and Alsina Elizabeth Brimhall on July 8, 1917 in Provo, Utah, the ninth of eleven children. She had a wonderful childhood growing up in the clinker brick house on the corner of 300 North and 300 East in Provo with her eight sisters and two brothers. She had many childhood friends who remained lifelong friends. Helen attended Brigham Young Training School, High School, and University, serving as secretary of the student body. She graduated in 1939 with a degree in speech and drama with a minor in English. She then taught at Dixon Jr. High School. She married Carlyle "A" Dahlquist on August 1, 1941 in the Manti LDS Temple. They headed to southern California to honeymoon and begin their new life together. Helen worked at the Southern California Gas Company and the Union Pacific Railroad while Carlyle attended the University of Southern California Dental School. Helen happily left the work force to raise their six children, first in Alhambra and then in Arcadia, California. Later, she worked at the LDS Institute at Pasadena City College. She loved the college environment and interacting with the students. Carlyle passed away suddenly Feb. 7, 1981. Helen continued working at the Institute until her retirement in 1990. She returned to Provo in 1990 to live closer to her sisters. Her daughter Nancy joined her in Provo; together they provided a welcoming harbor for many family visitors. Their home was a hub for extended family and friends. The grandchildren attending college loved getting together for Sunday dinner with Grandma and Aunt Nancy. Even as her health declined, Helen remained active, determined, and independent. Her daughter Nancy's companionship and care was a great source of comfort. Helen was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was intellectually active, an avid reader, and lover of all that is "praiseworthy." Above all, she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Helen is survived by her youngest sister, Elaine Holbrook Haymore, Salt Lake City; her children Kathleen (James) Crapo, Denver, CO; Nancy Dahlquist, Provo; Carlyle (Sherrie) Dahlquist, Blue Springs, MO; Helen (Lynn) Luker, Boise, ID; Mary (Tim) Sessions, Troutdale, OR; Scott (Danielle) Dahlquist, Bakersfield, CA; 26 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Edgemont 9th Ward Chapel, 4295 North Canyon Road, Provo. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Monday evening from 6 until 8 and at the church Tuesday one hour prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the George H. Brimhall Memorial Essay Contest, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
