Jerry Morgan Young Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Jerry Morgan Young, 90, former City Editor of the Provo Daily Herald, and later press secretary to Congressman Howard C. Nielson, died on June 15, 2022. Jerry was born on October 10, 1931, in the back apartment of a private home in the East Mill Creek district of Salt Lake City, UT. He was the son of Ben Ernest and Cecil Morgan Young. His grandmother Salina Morgan was the attending midwife to the occasion. The family moved to Denver, CO and Oakland, CA before settling in Seattle, WA where he matriculated through the public school system, finally graduating from West Seattle High in 1950. The next year he was called to serve in the Spanish-American Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his mission he studied at the University of Washington then transferred to Brigham Young University where he met and married the former Suzanne Cannon in the St. George LDS Temple. The couple lived in Southern California where their four daughters were born and he graduated from UCLA in English. After graduation the family moved to Provo where he joined the staff at the Provo Daily Herald and continued his education by earning a Master’s degree in Communications at BYU. At the Herald he served first as a beat reporter and business editor before being named City Editor. He left the staff to work on the first of several political campaigns and continued writing as a freelance writer and editor. In time he was hired to work for then Congressman Howard C. Nielson in Washington D.C. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; four daughters: Cindy Wilson (Barry); Julie Hunter; Vicki Nunes (Rick); and Laurie Roper (David); 14 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister and brother. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 12:00 pm in the Edgemont 12th Ward Chapel, 350 E. 2950 N., Provo, where friends may call an hour prior to services. Burial will be at the Timpanogos Memorial Gardens, 1000 N. 400 E., Orem immediately following the services. Condolences may be expressed at www.bergmortuary.com.
