September 17, 1943 - September 26, 2012
Joseph Harold Abegglen Jr. put down his pen, closed his briefcase, and slipped the surly bonds of earth life. He successfully completed his mortal mission and returned to his heavenly home to give report to his loved ones on September 26, 2012 after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. On September 17, 1943 he was welcomed to this life by his parents, J. Harold Abegglen and Marie Hawkes Abegglen along with his twin sister Joan. His early years were spent in Hailey and Twin Falls Idaho where he was involved in Scouting, music and competitive swimming. He turned down an appointment to the Air Force Academy to serve a mission for the LDS Church in Bavaria Germany, only to be called to open the Italian Mission a year and a half into his mission. He graduated from BYU in 1967 with a focus on linguistics and a Master's degree from the Air Force Post Graduate Intelligence School in 1979. Joe always had a love for languages and His multi-linguistic abilities led to 30 years of intrigue in the Intelligence community. While an undergraduate student at BYU he was part of the Ballroom Dance Team and Program Bureau. He loved traveling the world entertaining military troops. He would often tell people that his future wife saved his life as a flight nurse during the Vietnam War, a slight stretch of the truth. He married his nurse sweetheart for time and all eternity on January 16, 1970 in the Oakland Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints starting off a wonderful world wide adventure of 43 years. He loved engaging people in gospel discussions and telling captivating stories. His favorite experience was serving as a Temple worker in the Provo Temple. Through that experience he made many lifetime friends and had many wonderful spiritual experiences. Survived by wife JoAnn C. Abegglen, Provo; 3 children: Sara Eberhard (Brian) Provo; Jon Abegglen (Lisa) Salt Lake City; Shannon Smith (Nate) Park City; 2 sisters Connie Kohler of Midway, and his twin sister Joan Levy of Auburn CA.; 9 very loved grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents J. Harold Abegglen and Marie Hawkes Abegglen. Farewell funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Grandview 13th Ward Chapel, 1260 West 1150 North, Provo, Utah. Friends will be welcome from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Midway Cemetery. Condolences may be sent through his obituary at www.bergmortuary.com.
