Mary Melisande "Mellie" Smuin

May 11, 1940 - May 24, 2021

Mary Melisande “Mellie” Smuin, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021 at the age of 81. Mellie was born in Spring City, Utah on May 11, 1940 to Ferril Mayne Sorenson and Florence Helen Hanson Sorenson. When she was three her family moved to American Fork, Utah where she grew up. Her favorite place that she lived was Gelnhausen, Germany. Mellie married her high school sweetheart, Larry Nesbit Burningham on November 20, 1958, and they had three children. Later she married Ralph “Dave” Smuin Jr. on November 20, 1969, and they had a daughter. At one time she worked three jobs, her favorites being a dispatcher with the Pleasant Grove, Utah Police Department and Nestlé USA from where she retired. She also loved her job at the JOHS rubber factory in Gelhausen, Germany. Mellie was strong willed. She loved to travel the world with her brothers and their wives. Mellie loved her grandchildren and took joy in taking them and her children on adventures. Her home was warm, welcoming, and full of light and mementos from her exciting life. She had her trials and downfalls, but she overcame them to make herself better. Her stories will fill the hearts of family and loved ones for generations. Mellie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mellie was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Bart Larry Burningham. She is survived by her children, Melanie Burningham, Layne (Monica) Burningham, and Stephanie Hendry; grandchildren, Brady, Carson, Dylan (Skylee), and Cassidy Burningham; KaiLoni, Gabrielle, and Noah Hendry, one great-grandson, Shawn Burningham; brothers, David M. (Joan) Sorenson, Kenneth R. (Connie) Sorenson, and Ferril M. (Gayla) Sorenson; and her cherished nieces and nephews. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bergmortuary.com.
