May 19, 1957 - June 17, 2021
Paul Stephen Burnham passed away sleeping in his apartment at Canyon Breeze Senior Living in Orem, Utah. He went to heaven to be with God and mom at the age of 65 years on June 17, 2021. Preceded in death by his dad (Keith) and his mom (Mary). Lovingly remembered by his two sisters, Elizabeth and Nannette Burnham and John Hillar. Paul was born to Keith Parley and Mary Moran Burnham on May 19, 1957 in Provo, Utah. He had a difficult adult life due to alcoholism and related health issues. Mom never turned her back on Paul and was always there for his wild days to straighten him out. They were very close. We believe Paul died of a broken heart less than a month after Mom’s death. He had many friends, including Bernard and Russell. Everyone loved having Paul around and their faces lighted up when they saw Paul. He was the first to volunteer to help another person with anything. He talked to everyone. Paul had really long curly red hair. He was 50% Irish and 50% Scottish Catholic. He went to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School until it closed in 1971 and graduated from Provo High School. He spent his childhood playing in the “river bottoms”. Those river bottoms are now filled with houses. He belonged to Boy Scouts of America. Paul was an Eagle Scout and achieved the Order of the Arrow. He was an avid sports fan (especially football and basketball). He always picked the U of U, especially when they played BYU. Paul was an excellent athlete. He and Dad loved outdoor activities including tennis, skiing, hiking, hunting, and fishing on the Provo River. They spent hours fishing the Provo River starting with Paul at an early age. Paul got his love of skiing from Dad and was an expert skier. He loved camping in the Unitas. He loved the holidays, including decorating, and cooking. Every month had a holiday in Paul and mom’s eyes. Paul loved to cook and barbecue; he was especially good at sweets (cakes, etc.) and breads. He liked to make chocolate suckers in various shapes for each holiday. During the summer, he was in charge of the barbecue. When he became disabled and moved into Canyon Breeze, he continued to barbecue frequently with Bernard. He insisted on making the treats from our childhood for every Christmas, including cereal mix, rice crispy squares, cheese balls, and meatballs. Paul loved his gardens! He spent hours each day watering and fertilizing “his” gardens including the vegetables and flowers at Canyon Breeze. He took on the rose gardens at and spent the spring trimming the bushes for better health and bigger flowers. He planted flowers in pots around his apartment that grew to be huge. The coronavirus pandemic was hard on the everybody. Canyon Breeze residents had to stay in their apartments and the dining room was closed. The hourly residential group activities stopped; Paul especially missed Bingo. Meals were delivered to each person, but Paul was ecstatic when the dining room reopened. Mom and Paul enjoyed multiple video calls each day on their GrandPads. The isolation took a tool on everyone. Paul spent his last days enjoying his garden and the hummingbirds. Paul died peacefully, in his own bed the night of June 17, 2021. Paul wanted to be cremated with his ashes sprinkled in the Unitas Mountains (Wasatch Cache National Forest), Utah. A Celebration of Paul’s Life will be held at Canyon Breeze at a later date. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.bergmortuary.com.
