Penny Sue Amyx Creager Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Penny Sue Amyx Creager, our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2022. Her vibrant spirit will be greatly missed as she touched the lives of so many through her love and service to others. We are so happy that she is now reunited with her best friend and love of her life, our father, James Vance Creager. Penny was born January 31, 1943 in Los Angeles, California to Arthur Dean and Dorothy Louise Amyx. Her only brother was Daniel Amyx who preceded her in death. She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Sherry and Darrel Jones (Warrenton, MO), Annette and Julian Boswell (St. Charles, MO), and Elizabeth and Eric Meyers (Provo, UT); 19 grandchildren and 37 (soon to be 40) great grandchildren. Penny’s family moved to Downey, California when she was ten years old. Her favorite family tradition was camping on the beach or in the mountains with her family as her parents fished. Penny was a diligent and gifted student. She learned to play the violin, loved to swim, ice skate, and participated in the YWCA and Job’s daughters in her youth. She loved to sew and knit. Penny married John Winters in 1958 with whom she had three daughters. They divorced in 1965. With her mother’s help as babysitter, Penny attended Cerritos College and graduated in 1961, majoring in mathematics. She worked for Autonetics as a statistician, enjoyed a couple of years at home with her daughters, then returned to work in 1964 for Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California as a computer programmer/manager until retirement in 1989. The turning point in Penny’s life was March 1965 when she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She finally found the faith she had sought for diligently as a girl when she attended a dozen other churches. Penny married James Creager, an electrical engineer, on January 15, 1966. Penny and Jim commuted to and from Douglas Aircraft together until they retired. Jim adopted the girls and they were sealed together as an eternal family in the Los Angeles Temple, November 1967. The ensuing years brought wonderful family times, beautiful and sacred experiences through service in the church and successful career opportunities. Penny fulfilled many church positions in the Sunday School, Young Women’s Program, Relief Society, Cub Scouts, and was a temple ordinance worker in the Los Angeles and Newport Beach temples. Penny will always be remembered for her big heart. She loved her family and took great joy in being a grandmother! She always said her grandchildren were her greatest treasures. She also loved animals, especially dogs, and was always willing to take in a pet that needed a home. Over the years Penny and Jim opened their home to many young women and grandchildren who needed a place to stay. They have a special place in their hearts for Tam Le, their Vietnamese foster daughter, and their Australian daughters, Kerrie Edwards and Lorelle Halfhyde. Penny loved her home in Huntington Beach, California and never wanted to leave her dear friends there. However, in 2016, she decided to move to Utah to be near family and soon afterwards was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her family in Utah loved having her be a big part of their lives! She lived courageously and enjoyed studying scriptures, reading books and daily dog walks with her daughter. She also continued to knit and enjoyed making blankets for her great grandchildren. Eventually her disease progressed, and she could no longer do all that she loved. Her family is truly grateful for the patient and loving people at Jamestown Memory Care who helped fill her last year with kindness and peace. We will always be grateful for the family and friends who loved and supported her to the end. Thank you! Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center Street, Provo, Utah. Friends may call from 9:30-10:50 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at the Westminster Memorial Park Cemetery, 14801 Beach Boulevard, Westminster, California.
