Wendell Allred

Wendell Union Allred peacefully passed from this life 25 August 2011 in Provo, Utah, following a stroke. Born 8 June 1918 in Afton, Wyoming, to Theras and Florence (Porter) Allred. Spent his youth in Star Valley, Wyoming, Paris, Idaho, Sanford, Colorado, and Logan, Grantsville and Provo, Utah. Graduated from Provo High in 1936. Served in the U.S. Army, 29th Engineer Topographic Battalion, 1941-1946, in Portland, Oregon, and the Philippines. Married Norma Jean Hall 2 June 1945, later divorced. Married Virginia Booth 19 December 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. Received bachelor's degree from BYU in 1954 in Math and Physics. While working for the Topographic Division of the U.S. Geological Survey for 35 years, he and his family resided in Sacramento and Palo Alto, California. He and Virginia retired and returned to Provo in 1981. A faithful member of the LDS Church, he served in many callings, including twice as stake missionary and financial clerk, and for 16 years enjoyed being the Webelos Leader in the Oak Hills 4th Ward. Recipient of the Provo Peak Award and inventor of high-tech Arrow of Light box extraordinaire. He enjoyed his family, the gospel, history, music, computers, electronics, hiking and living next to his beloved mountains. Wendell is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Provo, son Kelly (Lynda) Allred of Las Cruces, New Mexico, daughter Beverly (Eric) Royer of Orem, daughter-in-law Janie Allred of Pleasant Grove, and 12 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren in Utah, Idaho, New Mexico and Oklahoma. He is also survived by brother McKay (Velma) Allred of Boulder, Colorado, sisters Elaine (Keith) Hawkins of Highland, Joye (Rulon) Cluff of Provo, Noreen (Dennis) Hess of Orem, and Carol (Vern) Bean of Frederick, Maryland, and sisters-in-law LuDean Allred of Wales, Utah, and Emily Allred of Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his son Cory Wendell Allred, grandson Nathan Kelly Allred, brothers Quathel, Avard, Worth and Forrest, and sisters Iris Nielsen, Olga Nicol and Quella Hart. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 30 August 2011, at the Oak Hills 1st and 7th Ward Chapel at 1038 North 1200 East (at the south end of Cherry Lane). Friends may call on Monday evening, 29 August 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo, and at the church prior to the services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Wendell's memory to Primary Children's Medical Center. The family would like to thank home teacher David Harlow, nurse Amy Hansen, bathers and therapists from Alpine Home Care, the staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Drs.
